A healthy lifestyle is not just for home. If you've established a successful exercise regimen, don't let vacation calories ruin it. The experience of traveling often leads people to eat more calories, make poor food selections, and throw caution to the wind. Although it is fun to splurge on special treats as you're immersing yourself in new settings and cultures, here are a few tips to help you stay balanced:
1. Avoid starches and sugars when sampling.
If you're traveling abroad or visiting a new area domestically that is famous for its food, try to reduce the damage to your waistline by sampling foods that do not have a great deal of bread (which converts to sugar) or any other sugary item such as sweet syrups. The fastest way to gain weight is fill your blood with sugar, which will increase insulin, the hormone that tells your body to store fat.
2. Bring Your Own Snacks
If you're not concerned about sampling the foods native to where you are visiting, pack your own healthy snacks -- your favorite fruits and nuts or low-carb yogurt and non-sugary drinks.
Water is one of the key ingredients to helping your body stay healthy and keep off extra weight while you're traveling. Drink plenty of it. If you're traveling in a foreign country, however, check guidelines for drinking water there and, if possible, bring your own water or bring a water filtration system.
4. Intentional Exercise
Traveling can have its own measure of exercise as you're rushing around airports or roaming tourist locations. Although it's nice to have car service from time-to-time, there are ways to add even more exercise opportunities like walking or renting a bicycle instead of taking a taxi or public transportation. Or, when choosing the activities for your itinerary, intentionally go for the more strenuous or less convenient choices.
5. Go for low-calorie beverages.
It's tempting to take the easy way out while traveling and purchase whatever drink is most easily available when you're thirsty. Be cautious instead and try to select drinks that have little or no sugar in them and are low-calorie. This will keep you hydrated without pumping your body with things you don't need.
Healthy Traveling Means Happier Vacationing
If you load yourself down with poor food choices, lack of water and exercise, and excess sugar, your body will crash hard. There's nothing worse than trying to enjoy a vacation while your body is dragging with lethargy.
