summer_camps_tow_2018_5Ahhh summer! That time of tranquil mornings, long days, and warm nights that stretch seamlessly from June to the start of the next school year. While summer is relaxed, oftentimes parents are at a loss as to how to keep kids engaged and entertained. Below we’ve provided some ideas to help keep the entire family happy during the long break.

Merritt Summer Camps. Summer is a great time for kids to attend summer camps at our various Merritt Clubs locations.  Our summer camps provide kids of all ages and abilities the opportunity to socialize with their peers in a structured, fun, educational, and meaningful environment.  Our camps cater to all kids and their various interests. Some of our camps include junior sports, art, Harry Potter, zookeeper, science and space, theater, and more. Week 3 of camps kicked off this week, and we have openings for the remainder of the summer. Visit merrittclubs.com/camps to register online.

Check out the library. Most libraries offer incentives in the way of prizes for kids who read a certain number of books during the summer months. For example, Baltimore County Public Library offers a summer reading challenge each year. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories” and runs through September 1st. The program features a variety of events and programs to encourage participants of all ages (including adult!) to explore, learn, and connect through books, programs, and activities, AND earn points for a chance to win some valuable prizes.

Create in the kitchen. This is a great time for kids to experiment with cooking and baking. With an abundance of fresh summer fruit and vegetables, there are plenty of healthy snacks to create. Try making fruit kabobs, cutting vegetables into fun shapes, or making your own popsicles.

Explore your own city. Who says you have to go out of town to have an adventure? Get a paper map of your city or state and some push pins. Plan out the places you’ll visit and after your visit, have the kids pin the location. At the end of the summer it will be fun to see all the places you’ve been.

Free bowling and movies. When you need a break and the kids need a break, remember that many bowling alleys and movie theaters offer free (or almost free) games and movies all summer long. Perfect for rainy or super-hot humid Baltimore summer days! Check out the list of freebies here:
