headshotHello 2019! With every new year, we hear about new resolutions, new goals, new plans. We see that with gyms being packed in the month of January. Everybody is eager to start a new journey and to get results.

One program that Merritt Clubs has that's been known to show results is Tribe Team Training. Members and non-members take this 6-week session on to challenge themselves and to work with a team that will motivate them and push them.

We talked to our resident Tribe expert Kara Glinowiecki to get all the deets about this program.

What made you want to be a trainer and how long have you been with Merritt?

I wanted to be a personal trainer because I started out teaching group fitness classes about 5 years ago and enjoyed every minute of it! After helping members, and seeing them reach little milestones, I wanted to help them on a more personal level so I decided to become a personal trainer. I love how group fitness can be so much fun so I wanted to bring that into my 1-on-1 training as well.

I’ve been with Merritt for about 2 years now. I just had my work anniversary in December [2018]. Two years down and forever to go!

What do you specialize in?

I specialize in general weight loss for men and women. I enjoying working with kids and teenagers as well as doing small group training programs.

One program that has been giving members results is Tribe Team Training. What is it with Tribe that makes it different from group fitness? Is this considered small group training?

Yes, Tribe is considered small group training. It is different from group fitness because in group fitness classes there will be anywhere from 20 up to 50 members in a class. With small group training, you have a personal trainer and a group of 4 to 10 members so you get a little more one-on-one attention from the coach that will focus on your form and personalize modifications for your needs. Tribe is a 6-week program that meets twice a week.

What are the benefits of Tribe?

Benefits of Tribe are: You are in a small group setting with a personal trainer so you get that accountability of just showing up to the gym. Because you are with the same team for 6 weeks, it creates a bond between teammates, so you won’t want to let your team down by missing a session! You gain new friendships and get real fitness results by motivating each other, keeping each other accountable, and having fun.

How was your own personal experience with Tribe?

Before I became a [Tribe] coach, I participated in a season just as a participant. It was a great experience to be on the other side. With being a personal trainer and a group fitness instructor, I’m usually leading the group so it was nice to be a part of one and focus on my own fitness goals. I became good friends with my teammates and we motivated and pushed each other to do better. The coach really helped keep me accountable and push me to my limits. I personally improved on certain exercises such as, my push-ups got better, and I was getting stronger with chin-ups. Taking Tribe was really nice to switch up my routine and do something different.

Who can join the Tribe? Is there a certain fitness level that’s required?

Anyone can do Tribe; It doesn’t matter what fitness level you are. We do have 2 different Tribe programs to accommodate everybody. TribeFIT is high impact so there’s going be a lot of jumping and running, so somebody with chronic knee issues, TribeFit may not best choice for them. We do have TribeLIFE which is low impact but it doesn’t mean it’s any easier! A lot of exercises are more grounded, and very functional. We use the ViPR’s, which are a unique piece of equipment that we only use for TribeLIFE. Both programs focus on functional fitness and will help you gain strength for everyday life.

Will there be free sessions for members and non-members so they can try it out first?

Yes. After every 6-week session of Tribe we have our free trial week. We offer various times that accommodate most people so you can try it out to see if it’s a good fit before you commit to the season.

Want to see if Tribe is for you? Merritt Clubs will have a free trial week starting Monday, January 14th. Sign up here to secure a spot!
