Kids Need Fitness Too: Merritt Clubs Provides Some Helpful Tips

Create a family tradition, and encourage your kids to exercise!  The American Heart Association recommends all children ages two and older should participate in at least 30 minutes of enjoyable, moderate-intensity physical activities every day.

Working out doesn't have to be a chore. Like fitness for adults, kids fitness can be fun, inspiring and rewarding.

These activities are sure to hit the mark; easy to incorporate into everyday life, try one of these tips that are guaranteed to make kids more excited to get active.

1. Just Dance!

Turn up the music and dance it out. Turn on a music channel on the television, or have the kids choose the playlist. Children are more likely to think of this as a dance party, rather than a dance workout.  Music is powerful. According to the Huffington Post, music can elevate your mood and help you keep pace.

2. Go for a hike.

Lace up your boots and go for a hike. There are many trails in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, that are reasonable day-trips from Baltimore. Hiking feels like an adventure for kids because they can explore new territory, and be around wildlife and nature. They'll break a sweat without even realizing they're exercising.

3. Bring kids to your next class.

Adults can reap the benefits of group fitness classes, and so can kids! If your child is over ten years old, many instructors will allow them to participate in group classes including yoga, zumba, bootcamp and pilates.

Important note: strenuous classes such as CrossFit or Body pump may be too intense for youngsters, check with the instructor before bringing the kids along.

4. Make it a digital competition.

Fitbits, pedometer apps, and wearable tracking devices are growing in popularity. This trend isn't going away any time soon. Within the year there will be even more statistics on whether or not these devices are working to engage adults in increasing their physical activity. If you want to spur some familial competition, these digital devices will hold your family accountable and deliver accurate numbers for tracking purposes. Simple changes, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or taking the dog for longer walks instead of just letting them out back, add up to an overall healthier lifestyle.

Merritt Clubs offers a variety of options to get kids active, including KidFIT classes, parties and summer camp. In the Baltimore downtown location there is an open indoor track and basketball court, making exercise a game.
